The Full Form Of MPEG

What Is The Full Form Of MPEG? MPEG stands for Moving Picture Experts Group. It is a working set of government that’s established to set standards for video and audio compression and transmission. It develops sound video file formats that are known as MPEG. This group is shaped by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It has released various versions of file (criteria ) namely MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-3, MPEG-4, MPEG-7, MPEG-21 etc.

The Full Form Of MPEG. The MPEG standard is a set of spec for compressed video and sound file. It is designed for storing video on Digital Audio Tapes (DAT) and sound files on standard sound Compact Disc (CD). The MPEG file has”.mpeg” as a file extension. In the past, the MPEG files required hardware decoder for storing and playback today, it needs software-only codecs.

MPEG was established in January 1988 from the initiative and assistance of Leonardo Chiariglione and Hiroshi Yasuda. Its first meeting was held in Ottawa, Canada in May 1988. Since, 1988, it has produced various standards that assisted business offer users more enjoyable digital media experience. Through the years, since its inception, it has grown to a ISO working group. Today, around 350 experts from some 200 businesses from more than 20 nations take part in MPEG meetings.  Its meetings are held 4 times in a year in the months of January, Apr, July and October.

The MPEG algorithm compresses the information to small bits. These bits may be easily transmitted and decompressed and after that the video is encoded via a method called Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). The compression rate of MPEG is quite large as it stores only the changes that happen from one frame to another frame. It doesn’t store the whole framework that lets it decrease the dimensions of file.
MPEG follows the following steps to develop a standard:

  • Indentify the requirement of a standard
  • Gather the requirements
  • Call for suggestions
  • Evaluate the suggestions
  • technological development
